Grant is provided under the Democracy and Human Rights Fund in Kenya to Nairobi Law Monthly Trust to support re-emergence of the alternative press in Kenya by financing publication of the Nairobi Law Monthly for 12 months. Since its launching in 1987, the Monthly has provided a forum for critical comment and analysis of the democratization process in Kenya and for exposing human rights violations. Due to its pro-democracy stance, the publication faced continual harassment from the Government of Kenya in the form of confiscation, impoundment, and outright prohibition, causing it to fold in 9/93. The grant will support monthly publication of 5,000 copies; prior to its suspension, monthly circulation was 40,000 copies.
