Evaluates project to improve livestock production in Upper Volta. This final report covers the period 6/77-11/80. No methodology was specified. A basis has been established for implementing livestock programs at village sites. Accomplishments under phase one include the following: Local committees of livestock producers were organized at six sites, which provided data and tested innovations to be used in phase two. Several innovations were tested. Inclosure/exclosure plots were installed to test rest-rotation and other controlled grazing systems. Concrete vaccination corrals were constructed. Color-coded vaccination receipts were provided for vaccination of cattle, sheep, goats, and chickens. A chicken project for women was initiated. Existing wells were improved and new wells dug. Tree and bush species for supplemental feeding of livestock were planted. A quantitative baseline was also established to assess the status of animal health, productive capacity of rangelands (including the establishment of trend plots for monitoring changes in productivity), animal production practices, women”s roles in livestock production, and rangeland wood exploitation. Training was also provided. Extension agents, field assistants, and livestock nurses were trained in field activities and in working with village people. B.S. Degrees in animal science and range management were awarded to two counterparts by New Mexico State University. A study tour of range management practices in southwestern areas of the United States was provided. Voltaics assigned to the project by the Livestock Service were given on-the-job training in project operation and management. Students from the University of Ouagadougou worked with the Consortium International Development (CID). The CID team, Government of Upper Volta counterparts, USAID, and interested Voltaics together designed phase two from data collected and tested under phase one. Phase two was to cover administration and core support, natural resources, human resources and social service, animal health, and animal production. A.I.D., however, terminated the project after phase one.
