Grant to the International Eye Foundation (IEF) to increase local capacity to prevent and treat eye diseases and other childhood diseases in the Lower Shire Valley of eastern Malawi. IEF will focus on establishing a village-level capability to administer Vitamin A to all children under 6 and lactating mothers twice yearly. Other project components will include: blanket treatment of trachoma, a contagious eye infection which leads to blindness; training traditional birth attendants in oral rehydration techniques, proper breastfeeding and weaning practices, and nutrition education; and stimulating the development of protected sources of safe, potable water.
