The results of a review of records on U.S. assistance to higher education in developing countries prior to 1970 are presented in this report. Separate sections of the report provide discussions and detailed listings of developing country educational institutions which have received U.S. assistance, U.S. institutions which have provided assistance, projects which have included a higher education component, faculties in developing country institutions that have received assistance, and library numbers for relevant publications in the A.I.D. library. The study revealed that 77 U.S. universities and consortia have provided assistance to 177 institutions of higher education in developing countries. Faculties assisted have included: agriculture (80); business administration (25); engineeering (51); medicine (27); and public administration (22). U.S. assistance was also given to 37 miscellaneous faculties – e.g., administration, economics, forestry, geology, labor, law, science, and veterinary science. Although the report lists 121 education faculties as receiving assistance, this figure includes aid to the total institution. A final section recommends 68 institutions or projects and five countries as possible candidates for future studies on the impact of U.S. assistance to higher education in developing countries. Ten tables are included in the text. (Author abstract, modified)
