Findings of a 2-week study to define options – primarily through public sector channels – for increasing the productivity of irrigated farming in the Dominican Republic”s Azua Valley are summarized. The Valley”s agricultural system and existing and planned irrigation infrastructure are briefly discussed in the context of recent water management problems. A narrative summary of the Secretariat of Agriculture”s proposed complementary investment project for the Valley”s land reform resettlement areas highlights the proposed project”s six components (irrigation and drainage system construction, agricultural credit, acquisition of machinery and equipment, technical assistance, research support, and electric power system installation). Additional options for improving irrigated agriculture in the Valley are discussed, including A.I.D.”s On-Farm Water Management Project, rehabilitation of Puerto Viejo, and investment in Phase II of ongoing irrigation system construction. Proposals concerning the composition of project development teams conclude the paper.
