This study presents the results of two field surveys and other specific studies which were carried out to determine and evaluate the consumption of firewood and the problems which arise due to the use of wood as fuel by small rural industries in Panama such as small sugar refineries, bakeries, ceramics, brick and roof tile kilns, restaurants, salt producers and by larger industries such as sugar refineries and alcohol distilleries.

Abstract
It is estimated that every year these industries burn more than 35000 steres of fuelwood for fuel. This is equivalent to a plantation of approximately 1200 ha, if its annual increment reaches some 30 m3/ha. Within the groups of industries which were studied, family industries which produce honey cane and "panela" are the ones that utilize the greatest amount (48%) of fuelwood due to their number and to their activity during the year. Problems related to accessibility, farm location, land area, lack of knowledge of forestry alternatives and other factors have restricted the production and the supply of fuelwood to the industries; because of this reason, several ideas in how to produce trees for fuelwood and other products within the conditions and resources of the studied industries are suggested.
