Riviere, Lydie · 1983

Abstract
Special evaluation covers the period to 5/83 and is based on interviews with farmers who had taken from 1 to 4 years of correspondence courses. As a result of the courses, 70% of respondents experienced an increase in cotton output between 1980 and 1982. To varying degrees, the training has helped farmers to implement modern agricultural techniques in such areas as: field preparation and selection; seed purchase; proper density row seeding; fertilizer and pesticide use; livestock rearing; and crop management. Less success has been achieved with regard to garden crops and use of irrigation and erosion-prevention techniques. In addition, training of women has been minimal and farmers have undertaken few collective efforts. Generally, the relationship between farmers and extension agents has been improved. Relationships with other villagers, however, have been mixed; some villagers are hostile or jealous, while others are eager to learn from participating farmers. It is recommended that training focus more on the financial aspects of farm management, that collective actions be encouraged, and that more training be given to extensionists.
