GRANT PROVIDED TO THE GOVERNMENT OF INDONESIA TO DEVELOP AND FIELD TEST APPROPRIATE, LOW-COST TECHNOLOGIES FOR PROMOTINGRURAL DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYMENT.

Abstract
TECHNOLOGIES TO BE DEVELOPED AND TESTED INCLUDE (1) PYROLYTIC CONVERSION OF AGRICULTURAL WASTE INTO ENERGY SOURCES AND (2) FERROCEMENT TECHNOLOGY FOR A VARIETY OF VILLAGE-LEVEL APPLICATIONS. THE DEVELOPMENT TECHNOLOGY CENTER (DTC) OF THE BANDUNG INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY WILL IMPLEMENT PROJECT. DTC WILL DESIGN A SMALL PYROLYTIC CONVERTER WHICH WILL UTILIZE WASTE RICE HULLS TO PRODUCE CHAR, FUEL OIL, AND GAS. DTC WILL THEN CONDUCT FIELD TESTS T DETERMINE CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATING COSTS, PERFORMANCE, AND ACCEPTABILITY. IF FUNDS ALLOW, DESIGNS FOR OTHER CONVERTERS BASED ON WASTE SAWDUST, WOOD, COCONUT HULLS AND HUSKS, OR OTHER AVAILABLE WASTES WILL BE DEVELOPED AND TESTED. DTC WILL ALSO DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT MODELS OF SUCH ITEMS AS CHARCOAL BRIQUETTE PRESSES AND SIMPLE STOVES AND LAMPS WHICH USE PYROLYTIC CHAR AND OIL. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY WILL PROVIDE DTC WITH SHORT-TERM CONSULTANTS TO ASSIST IN CONVERTER DESIGN. THE FERROCEMENT ACTIVITY WILL INCLUDE PRODUCT DESIGNS AND FIELD TESTS TO DETERMINE CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATING COSTS, PERFORMANCE, AND LOCAL ACCEPTABILITY. THE TERM "FERROCEMENT" WILL INCLUDE STANDARD FERROUS REINFORCEMENTS (STEEL MEST, CHOPPED WIRE), NON-FERROUS FIBERS (BAMBOO, BAGASSE, COCONUT HUSK), OR UNREINFORCED CEMENT. APPLICATIONS WILL INCLUDE ON-FARM GRAIN STORAGE BINS, WATER CATCHMENTS, WATER JARS, FOOD CONTAINERS, SMALL TO LARGE SIZED BOATS, DOCKS AND PONTOONS, WELL CASINGS, TOILET BOWLS, AND ROOF AND WALL PANELS. DTC WILL SUB-CONTRACT 2 LOCAL UNIVERSITIES TO CONDUCT FIELD TRAILS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE PROVINCES. THE ASIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY WILL PROVIDE TRAINING PROGRAMS AND SHORT-TERM CONSULTANTS IN FERROCEMENT TECHNOLGOY. THE GRANT WILL FINANCE THE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE/TRAINING CONTRACTS AS WELL AS MOST OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE. R&D, AND FIELD WORK COSTS OF DTC. 10% OF THE GRANT WILL BE RESERVED FOR FUNDING SPECIAL APPLICATIONS AND STUDIES OF OTHER APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGIES. GOI WILL CONTRIBUTE 25% OF TOTAL PROJECT COSTS.
