USAID. MISSION TO MADAGASCAR
Grant to AVOTRA, a Madagascan PVO, to improve and expand its two orphan centers: Salema, in the Antananarivo metropolitan area, and Betania, located about 20 km outside the capital.
1989

Abstract
The Salema Center will be relocated from its present site -- from which it, along with other tenants, has been evicted by the landlord -- to a former rice field on the southern limit of the city. Project funds will be used to finance the landfill of 4,077 square meters at the new site and to construct 7 buildings for administrative offices, housing for staff and children, a small clinic/dispensary, laundry facilities, and a kitchen/dining room. Funds will also be used to build a security wall and entrance gate, and to purchase equipment and supplies for the center. The Betania Center will receive funds to: construct two buildings including a kitchen/dining room for 120 children and a residence for the center director; purchase equipment for the new kitchen/dining room and agricultural inputs (e.g., seeds and water pumping equipment for the Center"s gardens and to improve the fishponds); and purchase 3 ha of adjoining land for use in supplying fuelwood from eucalyptus trees growing there and as a play area for the children.
