BOTSWANA. MINISTRY OF FINANCE AND DEVELOPMENT PLANNING
To update a June 1984 assessment for the Government of Botswana (GOB) of the education and human resources (E/HR) sector, this paper reports on changes in GOB educational policy and structure in the ensuing 18 months, during which time the GOB became a participating member of A.I.D."s Improving the Efficiency of Educational Systems (IEES) project, and fills in those areas in which the original report lacked adequate detail.

Abstract
The bulk of the paper consists of detailed updates on three topics. Since planned changes will require greater sector-level support, the economic and financial context of the E/HR systems are discussed in terms of the GOB"s capacity to fund education projects and the aggregate supply of manpower and teachers. Two chapters examine, respectively, teacher training and curriculum, particularly programmatic changes and needs related to GOB initiatives of reform and improvement. Summary updates of other E/HR subsectors covered in the original report - primary, secondary, higher, and nonformal education and vocational and management training - are presented first. Each section contains summary recommendations. A 4-page bibliography (1980-85) is appended.
