Abstract
This report provides an executive summary of an economic and technical feasibility study of gasifying coal to produce a substitute natural gas for distribution to the industrial areas of southern Brazil. Available data on coal resources and potential gas demand were compiled and analyzed and used to select a gas plant site, assess coal reserve areas, define coal characteristics, and design a pipeline system to serve the region"s principal potential industrial gas consumption areas. A gasification plant, to be located in the southern coal-producing area near Minas do Leao, was designed and a cost analysis made for technologies selected for their applicability to Brazil"s high-ash subbituminous coal. The pipeline for distributing substitute natural gas (and imported natural gas) to southern destinations was also designed and economically assessed. The above data are herein included, as is the combined economic analysis for the plant and pipelines. The report is supported by case studies and by numerous charts and diagrams.
