Abstract
EMPHASIZED ARE CONNECTORS AND CONSTRUCTION DETAILS THAT MAKE BUILDINGS LESS SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE, PARTICULARLY ROOF DAMAGE, FROM HIGH WINDS. SECTION 1 PRESENTS A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF MASONRY CONNECTORS AND TIMBER FASTENERS. SECTION 2 DISCUSSES IN DETAIL CONNECTORS IN BUILDING SYSTEMS USING MASONRY WALL CONSTRUCTION. SECTION 3 TREATS FASTENERS USED IN BUILDINGS OF TIMBER WALL CONSTRUCTION. THE BASIC IDEA IN THIS HEAVILY ILLUSTRATED REPORT IS THAT AN INEXPENSIVE LOW-RISE BUILDING WILL NOT COLLAPSE OR LOSE ITS ROOF IN HIGH WINDS IF, DURING CONSTRUCTION, CARE IS TAKEN IN SECURELY CONNECTING ALL OF ITS COMPONENTS, FROM THE FOUNDATION TO THE ROOF. THE TIMBER AND MASONRY CONNECTORS, TRUSS PLATES, SHEET METAL FASTENERS, AND OTHER SPECIAL METAL DEVICES USEFUL FOR ASSURING STRESS-RESISTANT CONNECTIONS ARE DESCRIBED AND THEIR USES EXPLAINED.
