Abstract
The initiative is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is implemented by Tetra Tech. The CBRMT initiative uses a range of adult education techniques, including trainer training, workshops, drawings, site visits, case studies, role-playing, participatory theater, and participatory mapping. These approaches have been developed in the context of artisanal mining in eastern DRC and are particularly adapted to low-literate client groups. Printed documents and guides will be distributed to participants, particularly those related to traceability, risk assessment and mitigation, and technical training. The modules of the CBRMT initiative are based on existing material, promote appropriation and sustainability, and incorporate a trainer training approach. The main sources of information and consultations for each area of training are indicated in Table 2. The use of all training tools is limited to supporting the development of capacities of the main stakeholders in the artisanal mining sector and should not be used for commercial purposes. The CBRMT initiative is based on adult learning principles, including adaptation, respect, and dialogue. The training materials should be presented in the most appropriate language for the participants, and if the audience has a very low level, images should be prioritized over words and interactive activities should be used instead of lectures. The trainers should respect all participants, listen attentively to them, and evaluate their contributions without interrupting or ridiculing them. The CBRMT initiative has developed 20 modules of training, which cover a wide range of topics, including the strengthening of governance and administration of cooperatives, the improvement of health, safety, and environment on mining sites, and the principles and application of due diligence and traceability in minerals supply chains. The selection of training topics is based on the results of the first year of CBRMT activities and the examination of the capacity for absorption and organizational evaluations of the Ministry of Technical Services to Mines. The CBRMT initiative will continue to refine and adapt the training documents during its implementation, based on feedback received during training sessions. A more detailed guide for trainers will be prepared to ensure that these trainings can be provided to other stakeholders after the end of the CBRMT project. The CBRMT initiative is a comprehensive approach to building the capacity of key actors in the minerals supply chain in the DRC. It aims to promote responsible minerals trade, improve the income of artisanal and small-scale miners and exporters, and increase government revenue. The initiative is based on adult learning principles and uses a range of training techniques to promote appropriation and sustainability.
