USAID. MISSION TO BANGLADESH
Grant is provided to the Cooperative for American Relief Everywhere (CARE) to assist the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT) to develop and implement a comprehensive training program for the faculty of the Family Welfare Visitor Training Institutes (FWVTI) in Bangladesh.
1981
Abstract
An institute of trainer training will be established within NIPORT with a permanent, full-time core faculty of six/seven, including a deputy director, three/four nurse tutors, a social science lecturer, and an education specialist. With the help of the CARE-MEDICO team, the core faculty will design and develop a curriculum for a 6-month training course for FWVTI field trainers (who comprise over half the FWVTI faculty) and will train approximately 15-20 new field trainers annually for a project total of 70. Practical training will be carried out at existing NIPORT clinical facilities and field practice areas; CARE-MEDICO will provide on-site clinical and field supervision. In addition, a comprehensive program of continuing education for all FWV faculty and supervisors, based on an evaluation of their needs in the areas of maternal/child health (MCH) skills and knowledge, teaching methodology, and management, will be developed. Two hundred current FWVTI faculty and supervisors will receive continuing education courses from CARE-MEDICO in practical skills needed to teach, organize field practice, and demonstrate clinical and family planning. Specific teaching materials for training of both new and existing FWVTI faculty will be developed as needed and will be incorporated into the FWVTI program. Seven NIPORT faculty and eight FWVTI faculty annually will receive specialized short-term training in the South Asian region. CARE will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the new training program and its effects on student performance at FWVTI. A MEDICO public health physician will act as liaison between NIPORT, CARE, and other participating agencies.
