INTERNATIONAL MAIZE AND WHEAT IMPROVEMENT CENTER (CIMMYT)
CIMMYT, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, has a mandate to develop improved germplasm and make this material available throughout the world, especially to developing countries.

Abstract
CIMMYT is in particular addressing production constraints in marginal production areas in two ways, through conventional breeding procedures to develop improved germplasm and through research aimed at crossing wheat with other related crops and wild species to obtain germplasm with characteristics desirable for marginal areas. In this report, progress and results are presented for CIMMYT"s major research programs in bread wheat, durum wheat, and triticale; for base support programs (pathology, wide crosses, germplasm development and banks, training, agronomy, milling and baking, and nursery development); and for regional and country programs, including bread and durum wheat improvement programs conducted in cooperation with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). The text is illustrated with numerous photographs; tables and figures provide data on research locations and results.
