Abstract
This paper discusses the program in maize population improvement of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). An introductory historical summary of developments in maize improvement programs is followed by a review of the responsibilities and activities of CIMMYT"s Back-Up and Advanced Research Units. Details on plant research and experimental procedures are provided, particularly for the Back-up Unit"s gene pool research and the Advanced Unit"s research in normal and quality protein maize (QPM) populations using experimental variety trials. Efforts to breed for special attributes such as earliness and disease- and insect-resistance are described, along with the development of QPM versions.
