1979
Abstract
and LDC planners and practitioners with information and technical assistance on the applications of educational communications technologies. The project will be implemented by a U.S. university or private organization. The major project thrust will be the continued operation of the US-based CDC. A cross-referencing system will be developed for the CDC"s 14,000-item multimedia library. Ongoing surveys of relevant literature will be conducted to ensure that the collection is kept up to date. About 30% of CDC efforts will go toward responding to 4,000 anticipated information requests from A.I.D. officials, LDC representatives, and members of the worldwide development community. The CDC will continue to produce three types of publications: (1) nine issues of a quarterly newsletter, Development Communications Report, containing articles on a wide range of development communications topics as well as reviews of relevant publications; (2) 36 Project Profiles, succinct comparative descriptions of projects which involve communications in various sectors; and (3) 10 state-of-the-art reviews prepared in response to requests transmitted through A.I.D. In addition, the CDC will prepare special audiovisual and print materials for use at A.I.D. conferences, seminars, and workshops on development communications applications. CDC staff will be available to provide USAID personnel with in-service training on the role of development communications in designing and using appropriate technologies. If funds permit, the CDC will continue to be responsible for the onsite management of seminars in Sierra Leone and Liberia. To improve on past efforts, the CDC will, in all its activities, attempt to better define target audiences; be more sensitive to problems in applying communications technologies in the field; fulfill an analytic function in summarizing and synthesizing development communications experience; and focus on applications for programs that reach a large number of the poor. Amendment No. 2 of 6/28/83 extends the project 33 months to 9/30/86 and increases life-of-project funding to: undertake special research on the uses of radio and microcomputers in development; produce a state-of-the-art study of the use of microcomputers in development programs; and disseminate information on this subject to LDC personnel and agencies.
