Abstract
Load research is a function, not a department, and is composed of three main groups: Energy Acquisition, Load Forecasting, and various skill sets assembled from within the company or through outside vendors. The primary skill set for load research is an Information Technology (IT) background, with additional skills obtained as needed. The load research team's work is exemplified by the peak day study, which provides a detailed analysis of customer segments and their energy usage patterns. The study identifies various customer segments, including single-family and multi-family households with and without space heat, as well as commercial customers such as small, medium, and large businesses. The study also examines the energy usage patterns of high-voltage loads, railroad, and various types of lighting. Load research data is used to create a statistically valid sample of customers that represents an entire customer group. This data is then used to create a usage profile that is representative of the entire customer group. The selection of a representative set of consumers is critical to ensuring that the data accurately reflects the energy usage patterns of the entire customer group. Load research allows Commonwealth Edison to disaggregate the system load into various customer segments, providing a more detailed understanding of energy usage patterns. This information is used to identify areas of energy loss and unaccounted for energy (UFE), which can be addressed through targeted energy efficiency initiatives. The peak day study is a key component of this effort, providing a detailed analysis of customer segments and their energy usage patterns. The load research team's work has significant implications for Commonwealth Edison's energy management efforts. By providing a detailed understanding of energy usage patterns, the team's work can help identify areas of energy loss and UFE, which can be addressed through targeted energy efficiency initiatives. This can ultimately lead to cost savings and improved energy efficiency for the company and its customers. Commonwealth Edison's load research team has developed a robust methodology for conducting load research, which involves the use of statistically valid samples of customers to create usage profiles that are representative of entire customer groups. This methodology has been applied in a variety of contexts, including the peak day study, which provides a detailed analysis of customer segments and their energy usage patterns. The load research team's work is critical to Commonwealth Edison's energy management efforts, and its methodology has significant implications for the company's ability to identify areas of energy loss and UFE. By providing a detailed understanding of energy usage patterns, the team's work can help identify opportunities for energy efficiency and cost savings, ultimately leading to improved energy efficiency for the company and its customers.
