Abstract

An initial section discusses the critical importance and potential contributions of an efficient market system to increasing FAV production and the conditions needed to create such a system. Section II discusses the evolution of Third World FAVM systems in terms of the factors requiring a change in the systems and the typical changes and problems endemic to the interaction of these factors. Section III reviews recent innovations in the organization and performance of the FAVM systems in Jamaica and Sri Lanka and compares their advantages and disadvantages. A final section presents conclusions on the critical factors affecting improved performance of Third World FAVM systems and recommends priority interventions for improving market system efficiency and related research and technical assistance initiatives. Also included are comments and recommendations on John Holtzman"s Rapid Reconnaissance Guidelines for Agricultural Marketing and Food Systems Research in Developing Countries.
