Abstract
The initiative aimed to address the challenges faced by the local economy, including soil degradation and limited market access. The main economic activities in Quetzaltenango include agriculture, with a focus on staple crops such as maize and beans. However, crop yields averaged 40% below regional benchmarks, indicating a need for improvement. Farmer training programs were implemented to promote sustainable agriculture practices, including composting and crop rotation. The Diagnóstico de Desarrollo Económico Local y de Adaptación al Cambio Climático (Local Economic Development and Climate Change Adaptation Diagnosis) was conducted to identify the main economic activities and challenges in Quetzaltenango. The analysis focused on the agricultural sector, including the production and marketing of staple crops. The study identified the main economic activities in the municipality, including agriculture, livestock, and services. The analysis of the economic activities in Quetzaltenango revealed that the agricultural sector is the main driver of the local economy. However, the sector faces several challenges, including soil degradation, limited market access, and climate change. The study identified the main economic activities in the municipality, including agriculture, livestock, and services. The Plan Municipal de Desarrollo Económico Local y de Adaptación al Cambio Climático (Municipal Plan for Local Economic Development and Climate Change Adaptation) was developed to address the challenges faced by the local economy. The plan focuses on three main areas: agricultural development, market access, and climate change adaptation. The plan aims to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the agricultural sector, increase market access for local producers, and promote climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The plan includes several strategies and actions to achieve these objectives, including the development of a value chain for the production and marketing of staple crops, the promotion of sustainable agriculture practices, and the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The implementation of the plan will be carried out through a series of activities and projects, including the development of a value chain for the production and marketing of staple crops, the promotion of sustainable agriculture practices, and the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The plan includes a detailed timeline and budget for the implementation of the activities and projects. The plan also includes a section on the implementation of the plan, which outlines the responsibilities and timelines for the implementation of the activities and projects. The plan includes a detailed budget for the implementation of the activities and projects, which will be funded by the USAID Nexos Locales project. The plan is a key tool for the implementation of the local economic development and climate change adaptation initiative in Quetzaltenango. The plan will help to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the agricultural sector, increase market access for local producers, and promote climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The plan will also help to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Quetzaltenango by promoting economic growth and reducing poverty.
