Abstract
firms to consider entering the Indian market for efficient electric end-use devices (EEDs); although India is a difficult market for foreign firms to enter, barriers are falling, especially in the power sector, where severe power shortages and high electricity prices are increasing the demand for EEDs. This report, based on research conducted in 1994 and 1995 in the cities of Bombay, Delhi, and Ahmedabad, is not a comprehensive survey, but rather aspires to provide insights into the Indian market. The report has three principal components: (1) an overview of the Indian business and power sector; (2) a discussion of the barriers to energy efficiency in India, including a review of how reforms in India are affecting the barriers, and recommendations for U.S. actions to minimize the barriers; and (3) a directory of some of the efficient electric and end-use technologies available in India, which includes an overview of each technology (including its description, market potential, savings potential, device-specific barriers, etc.), names and addresses of some of the Indian firms producing the technology, and specifications, prices, and estimated energy savings and payback periods for products currently available in India. The report covers the following EED categories and the relevant economic sectors where they are used: (1) motors, motor drives, soft-start controllers, belts, and rewinding for the industrial, service, and agriculture sectors; (2) lighting (lamps and ballasts) for the industrial, residential, commercial, and agriculture sector; (3) refrigerators for the residential and commercial sectors; (3) room air conditioners in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors; and (4) power factor correction devices for the industrial and commercial sectors. The report concentrates on lighting and motors because they have the largest potential for energy savings and many energy-efficient models are available.
