Abstract
programs have considerable potential for benefiting women if women"s roles, needs, and contributions are identified and then integrated into development policies and programs. This sourcebook presents information to help the Asia/Near East Bureau attain that objective. Introductory chapters review demographic and socioeconomic trends as well as trends in women"s participation in economic and public life; constraints on womens" participation are identified. The remaining chapters use detailed country-specific data to analyze the potential for expanding women"s opportunities and choices in five sectors: (1) private enterprise, (2) agriculture, (3) environment, (4) education, and (5) health, population, and nutrition. For each sector, a table is included that summarizes the Asia/Near East Bureau"s current emphases and presents options for increasing women"s economic participation.
