USAID. MISSION TO TUNISIA
Subproject (SP), added by Amendment of 7/10/87, to promote oral rehydration therapy (ORT).
1987
Abstract
The SP, which will focus on health worker training and educational and informational activities, will be implemented by Catholic Relief Services, working through its Tunisian counterpart, the National Committee for Social Solidarity (CNSS), and through the Ministry of Health (MOH). The SP has five components. (1) Training in diarrheal disease management and ORT communications strategies will be provided to CNSS maternal/child health center managers, staff, coordinators, and inspectors and to MOH regional health personnel (who in turn will train local MOH staff). Seminars will be held for national-level MOH officials and for private physicians, pharmacists, and pharmacy assistants. (2) ORT education will be provided to mothers and, secondarily, to the community at large. For mothers, group education will be conducted in CNSS centers, and individual education in MOH centers. Informational workshops will be held for community leaders and local authorities. (3) A variety of educational and training materials (including lesson plans, posters, brochures, and press releases) will be produced to support the above activities. (4) A mass media campaign on ORT will be carried out during the diarrheal seasons (May to October) in 1987 and 1988, to include radio spots and programs, TV skits, video documentaries, and a radio competition. (5) Questions concerning the continued availability of ORT salts will be resolved by the Government of Tunisia. Some salts will be provided under the SP, but by Spring 1988, the MOH must decide whether to proceed with its present plans to manufacture salts locally. The SP will fund feasibility and marketing studies, and when a feasible strategy is outlined, will provide production equipment/suppplies. UNICEF will collaborate in this component. By the end of the project, 50% more CNSS mothers and 30% more mothers in general will demonstrate correct ORT knowledge; also, 30% more mothers will be able to prepare oral rehydration solution and 40% more of the medical/pharmacy community will promote appropriate ORT.
