Abstract
The study, conducted by the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center, addresses in particular the dramatic decline in sweet potato planting occuring between 1971 and 1975. The report presents reasons for the decline, and provides a list of the study"s special objectives and working hypotheses. The research methodology, which primarily consisted of questionnaire surveys and interviews of random samplings of Taiwanese farmers, is also dilineated. The study"s results provide information on the effects of season, irrigation availability, soil type, and fertilizer on crop yield; economic data comprising production costs and the influence of production inputs; and a summary of farmer attitudes toward the profitability of sweet potato production. Numerous tables and several maps are included.
