Sign inACADEMY FOR EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, INC. (AED)
Combining approaches drawn from education, anthropology, behavioral research, and communication theories, Environmental Education and Communication (EE&C) develops tools such as social marketing, gender analysis, and participatory methodologies to increase understanding of the motivations and constraints involved in adopting environmentally positive behaviors.

Abstract
This paper describes how these tools can be used to foster environmentally sustainable cities by: (1) bringing diverse stakeholders together to identify and prioritize urban environmental issues affecting them; (2) defining specific behaviors that target audiences should adopt to solve these priority issues; (3) informing, educating, and motivating target audiences; and (4) working with these audiences to implement workable, cost-effective programs. Case studies demonstrate the use of EE&C tools to improve environmental conditions in Cite Soleil, Haiti; Quito, Ecuador; Jordan; and six cities in Asia. Finally, indicators are proposed for measuring the success of EE&C. Includes references.
