DEVELOPMENT ALTERNATIVES, INC. (DAI)
The growing proportion of women relative to men in Haiti, combined with women"s economically and socially disadvantaged status, gives particular urgency to the task of analyzing women"s roles and needs and of building these factors into the Mission strategy.

Abstract
To this end, a team from the Global Bureau"s Office of Women in Development (G/WID) worked with USAID/Haiti"s Strategic Objective (SO) teams to identify gender issues critical to the fulfillment of their SOs, and to find creative but realistic ways to integrate gender issues into all stages of strategic planning, implementation, and monitoring of the USAID/Haiti program. Results of these efforts are presented in this report. Each section begins with an overview of women"s status in Haiti derived from key social and economic indicators. Major gender issues are then discussed in each of four sectors (education, income generation, family health, and democratic governance), followed by an examination of strategic approaches to gender integration in that sector. Finally, key approaches and actions are proposed under each strategic objective, intermediate result, and associated indicators to ensure that gender issues are appropriately addressed throughout the USAID/Haiti program.
