Abstract
Martha Alter Chen to partially support a research study on women and household livelihood systems in rural India. Surveys and interviews will be conducted in one village in a drought-prone area of western India, where a local non-government organization (NGO) has targeted poor women as the beneficiaries of its rural development program. The purpose of this intensive data collection effort is to determine: (1) the livelihood system of households (including their adaptation to change and the contributions of individual household members according to age and sex); and (2) the relevance, appropriateness, and impact of interventions by selected governmental organizations, as well as by NGO"s - especially regarding the effects of the above-mentioned NGO rural development program. A comparison study of other NGO programs over a longer period in several different locations will also be pursued.
