Abstract
The guide, titled "Guide de Poche SONU," is designed to assist healthcare providers in recognizing and responding to obstetric and neonatal emergencies. The guide is organized by symptom and includes sections on evaluation, treatment, and referral. The guide emphasizes the importance of prompt recognition and response to obstetric and neonatal emergencies, which are leading causes of maternal and neonatal mortality in Rwanda. The guide provides a framework for healthcare providers to follow in responding to emergencies, including evaluation, stabilization, and referral to higher levels of care. The guide includes sections on common obstetric and neonatal emergencies, such as postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, and asphyxia. Each section provides a step-by-step guide for evaluation, treatment, and referral, as well as information on medications and essential supplies. The guide also emphasizes the importance of prevention and early detection of complications, particularly postpartum hemorrhage, which is a leading cause of maternal mortality in Rwanda. The guide provides information on active management of the third stage of labor, which has been shown to reduce the risk of postpartum hemorrhage. The guide was developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization and is based on the WHO's guidelines for managing complications of pregnancy and childbirth. The guide has been adapted from a similar guide developed by the Program ACCESS of Jhpiego. The guide is intended for use by healthcare providers at the primary care level, including midwives and doctors, and is designed to be a quick reference guide for responding to obstetric and neonatal emergencies. The guide is an important resource for improving the quality of care for pregnant women and newborns in Rwanda. The guide includes a section on the active management of the third stage of labor, which is a critical component of preventing postpartum hemorrhage. The guide also includes information on medications and essential supplies, as well as principles for interventions and prevention of infections. The guide has been developed to be a practical and easy-to-use resource for healthcare providers, and is an important step in improving the quality of care for pregnant women and newborns in Rwanda.
