Health International

The index is a collaborative effort between the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. It evaluates 194 countries across six categories: prevention, detection and reporting, rapid response, health system, compliance with international norms, and risk environment. The GHSI assesses a country's capacity to prevent the spread of infectious diseases through measures such as surveillance, contact tracing, and quarantine. It also evaluates the country's ability to detect and report public health events, including the use of laboratory testing and reporting systems. Rapid response capabilities, including the deployment of emergency responders and the availability of medical supplies, are also assessed. The health system category evaluates a country's healthcare infrastructure, including the availability of medical personnel, equipment, and facilities. Compliance with international norms, such as the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Health Regulations, is also assessed. Finally, the risk environment category evaluates the country's vulnerability to public health threats, including the presence of infectious diseases, natural disasters, and other hazards. The GHSI uses a scoring system to evaluate each country's performance across these categories. Countries are ranked based on their overall score, with higher scores indicating a stronger capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to public health crises. The index provides a valuable tool for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders to identify areas for improvement and prioritize investments in global health security. The GHSI has been widely used to inform policy and decision-making at the national and international levels.
