USAID. BUR. FOR AFRICA
Project to provide Missions with a quick response mechanism for funding AIDS prevention and control activities proposed by PVO"s, host country ministries of health, and other private and public sector entities in more than 30 African nations.
1988

Abstract
Either through core funding or Mission buy-in, the project will support the following types of activities: (1) PVO or host government AIDS prevention programs, including behavioral research, operations research, and IEC; (2) modest commodity support (e.g., laboratory equipment, clinical supplies, and educational materials); (3) TA to Missions for the design, development, and evaluation of AIDS-related activities; and (4) field testing of promising diagnostic assays. Support has already been pledged to two host country efforts: Zambia"s National STD Control Program, and Zaire"s National AIDS Control Plan. In the area of training, project funds could be used for: (1) the support of institution-strengthening activities for local laboratory training in HIV seroprevalence studies, blood screening, and sexually transmitted diseases detection; (2) regional and international conferences, workshops, and seminars on AIDS for policymakers, planners, technicians, and clinicians; and (3) training of trainers workshops for health care providers and educators in the subjects of epidemiology, transmission, prevention, and control. The project will also support the U.S. Bureau of the Census"s database on AIDS in Africa. The data base will provide Missions with information on the latest strategies and technologies in fighting the AIDS epidemic and also the most current epidemiological survey results and statistics. For more detailed information on this project, see the abstracts of country subprojects in the PROJECTS database and abstracts of in-country PVO activities in the DOCUMENT database.
