Two bibliographies, one annotated and one general, are presented here in an attempt to consolidate important theoretical and practical English-language materials on the African household.

Abstract
The annotated bibliography contains 113 citations representing the most important articles and books. The general bibliography, which lists 384 works, is meant as a quick reference to facilitate literature searches; the citations are presented in alphabetical order by author and include key words and in some cases a brief description. A subject/geographical area index is also provided. Current issues which are well represented in the bibliographies include, inter alia, concern with female-headed households, sexual division of labor, migration as a factor in household composition and labor, child labor, the rationality of farm households in adopting innovations, and the use of bargaining models in explaining household decisionmaking. Broader topics (e.g., women"s work, nutrition) are not covered comprehensively but rather represented by items of particular interest. Finally, while Africa is the focus of these bibliographies, works on other areas which are important to understanding concepts or issues are included.
