Do the varied forms of development assistance help reduce the rapid population growth that is the major obstacle to development in Bangladesh?

Abstract
To answer this question, this report first describes the Bongaarts analytic model of the determinants of fertility - the model projects the impact on future fertility of current changes in the various determinants of fertility - and uses it to estimate future fertility in Bangladesh. The report then examines the impact of development projects (e.g., female education, rural electrification, agricultural modernization, and family planning and maternal/child health services) on two proximate determinants of fertility: contraceptive use and age at marriage. Further discussion of the impact of development projects is presented in the final chapter which includes a table illustrating the demographic impact of and the cost involved in different development projects. A major conclusion is that the increased income resulting from development assistance will change personal goals and values (in about 10 years) such that they are competitive with the desire to have a large number of children. A 10-page bibliography (1946-85) is appended.
