Abstract
After briefly reviewing IRRI"s origins and mandate, this book examines: (1) the increasingly close collaboration between national rice programs and IRRI; (2) the gains made in collecting, maintaining, and using the world"s rice germplasm; (3) varietal research aimed at making high-yield varieties both disease and pest resistant; (4) advances in production technology; (5) efforts to integrate rice technology into farmers" production systems; (6) the impact of modern rice technology; and (7) IRRI"s training and information activities. A final chapter outlines IRRI"s future course, which will focus on increasing rice yields, especially in rainfed areas; ensuring the stability and sustainability of rice yields and farm profits; and providing more equitable distribution of the benefits of new rice technology.
