Abstract
Twenty-two faculty members spent 59 person-months acquiring language and cross-cultural skills and working experience in a developing country. In Costa Rica, 14 faculty members spent 20 person-months, some in actual in-service training and others collecting data in a survey of 140 farm families. This information was shared on campus through special seminars and incorporation into existing or new courses. Also, a master"s degree program in international development studies was initiated. An intensive, one-week training course for development advisory teams attracted 35 participants; a second course has 50 enrolled. Spanish-language classes were attended by 14 faculty members in spring and summer 1980, 11 in the fall and winter, and 10 in spring 1981. A second "hands-on" experience is planned for Honduras, while efforts continue in Costa Rica to promote participation by rural women in community development and to transfer technology to farmers.
