USAID. MISSION TO ZAMBIA
Project to rehabilitate the road between Lusaka and Kafue, Zambia.
1989

Abstract
The project will complete a regional program of trunk road rehabilitation begun in 1982 with Project 6900209. Funds will be provided for final design, construction, training, and maintenance equipment. The project will provide final engineering design and construction supervision services. A consulting engineering firm will be hired to carry out final road reconstruction design (including the preparation of tender documents), soils collection and analysis, and continuous site inspections to ensure that the construction contractor adheres to design standards. The project will rehabilitate a total of 49.4 km of road (reconstructing 9.85 km, overlaying and sealing 29.85 km, and patching and sealing 9.7 km). Two stretches of the road will also be realigned to improve visibility and widened to conform with Zambian road specifications. The project will also provide technical and managerial training for Zambian Department of Roads (DOR) personnel. Ten field mechanics will attend a four-week technical training program on heavy equipment maintenance and repair. In addition, each year one senior DOR engineer will be selected to participate in a four-week course in Tanzania on road maintenance and construction management. Finally, the project will provide funds for the procurement of road maintenance equipment. Equipment will be consigned to the DOR and will include, inter alia: tractor, roller unit, trailer, 2 dump trucks, bitumen distributor and storage tank, 2 chip spreaders, sweeper, line striper, vibratory compactor, and fuel storage tank.
