Grant is provided under the Regional Environmental and Natural Resource Management Project (5960150) to conduct a workshop on pesticide intoxications for private agro-chemical organizations and public sector health institutions in Central America.

Abstract
About 50 people will participate in the workshop, including representatives from each country"s ministry of health and national agro-chemical organizations. Lecture topics will include: (1) an overview of pesticides use and how it affects public and environmental health; (2) the agro-chemical industry"s process of developing toxicological data prior to registering a product; (3) the toxicology of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides; (4) the chronic affects of pesticide intoxications; (5) the risk and prevention of pesticide intoxications; and (6) the importance of recognizing and first aid treatment of poisoning. The objectives of the workshop will be to determine the content for a correspondence course on pesticide intoxications and their prevention. Workshop participants will also establish a methodology for tracking pesticide intoxications.
