INTERNATIONAL MAIZE AND WHEAT IMPROVEMENT CENTER (CIMMYT)
The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) surveyed 48 wheat farmers in North Veracruz, Mexico to identify priority variables to consider when planning on-farm research.

Abstract
Results of that survey are herein presented. After an overview of the integrated research methodology employed in the survey, results are presented concerning the importance of: agroclimatic conditions (rainfall, soils, and topography); socioeconomic conditions (land tenure, working capital, and input markets); the farming system (land use, crop rotations, labor hire, and off-farm income); and current maize production practices (tillage, planting, fertilization, weed and insect control, and maize harvest and use). Criteria for determining recommendation domains (homogeneous groups of targeted farmer beneficiaries) were identified as topography, farm size, and source of financing. Recommended research priorities concern chemical weed control, herbicides, fertilization, weevil control in storage, and high-yield varieties.
