It addresses practical topics, such as properly designed accounting and management information systems, evaluation and monitoring techniques, and commercial feasibility analyses of prospective borrowers. the operational managers and loan officers of financial intermediaries, who deal with the hands-on aspects of MSE programs, but have limited formal training in credit and financial management. More specifically, the manual addresses key credit concepts such as designing a loan policy, setting interest rates, selecting credit delivery mechanisms, reducing arrears, and recovering costs. It is divided into eight sections and contains materials designed to teach basic financial tools such as break-even analysis, cash-flow analysis, and balance sheet and income statement analysis. The package also contains supplementary reading materials, including a paper on integrating women borrowers into small credit programs. A sample workshop agenda, participant evaluation forms, and references to materials in French and Spanish are contained in the appendices. The materials in this package provide the basis for a 3- to 5-day workshop in credit management. It has been used for six such workshops worldwide. (Author abstract, modified)
