Abstract
The manual begins and concludes with hypothetical scenarios of a handicapped child"s "first day" in school and an "end of school party" which help to illustrate, on the one hand, problems faced by the child in entering school and, on the other, an evaluation of his/her progress. Guidelines are presented to help teachers prepare themselves and their classroom for the student"s arrival; develop an appropriate curriculum, understand a child"s thinking processes, work with parents, and chart the child"s progress; and present the child"s accomplishments. Each section includes a list of activities and questions designed to help the teacher facilitate a child"s integration and encourage progress. Teacher-child communication is stressed, and learning aids and adaptive equipment are discussed. A final section provides instructions for making simple classroom materials such as board games and games from wood.
