Abstract
By the end of the project, SAWS will have in operation: (1) community health outreach programs focusing on nutrition, sanitation, and general health principles in at least 40 communities in the environs of SAWS health care institutions in 13 countries (nutrition activities will focus on children under 5 and on mothers"/women"s groups); (2) agricultural extension programs focusing on growing garden vegetables and protein-rich legumes in at least 30 communities in the environs of SAWS educational institutions in 16 countries; (3) small community agribusiness projects utilizing appropriate technology to preserve seasonal foods or produce food byproducts in at least 10 impact areas. In addition, SAWS will have helped establish, in all impact areas, community committees, managed by local leaders, to provide health and nutrition information and prepare comprehensive programmatic plans. SAWS will train 4-6 health and nutrition promoters at each health care center and 4-6 agro-extension workers at each educational center; these centers will serve as the bases for all project operations. To help develop an information system in participating countries, all community workers will be trained in data collection techniques. SAWS will also: conduct feasibility studies and baseline surveys of the 6 new countries and 29 new target areas; prepare comprehensive training plans for all participating countries; provide TA from central and regional offices and a director for each country; and coordinate all project activities with relevant activities of host governments.
