Sustainable development increasingly is a central issue in the dialogue between the developing countries and the development assistance community, particularly with regard to the sustainability of non-traditional agricultural export (NTAE) industries.

Abstract
Focusing on this issue, the present paper: (1) reviews the findings of a study conducted by the author in 1989 in Central America on the export learning process for an NTAE crop -- melons; (2) reviews a case -- the Dominican Republic (DR) -- where the sustainability of a country"s NTAE industry has been jeopardized by the failure of the export learning process to address the task of "enhancing environmental protection and sustainable agricultural trade;" and (3) identifies potential research issues on how to enhance environmental protection and sustainable agricultural trade not only in the DR but also in the broader Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region.
