A 15-day survey and examination of sites in Niger"s pastoral zone was conducted in 8/90 to determine their development potential, given the prevailing ecological (i.e., climatological, topographical, hydrogeological, floristic, and faunistic) and sociological (i.e., cultural, economic, and demographic) regimens in which they operate.

Abstract
It was found that significant variation exists between sites. Ecological, sociological, and size variation contribute to measurable as well as qualifiable differences which can be used in a preliminary scheme of classification and evaluation. While virtually all of the 20 sites examined can be said to possess development potential, many of those in the northern section of the pastoral zone appear more likely to yield desirable results with conservation and anti- desertification techniques. Six model micro-sites are described, and possible interventions identified. (Author abstract, modified)
