Mid-term evaluation of a project to increase contraceptive prevalence in Tanzania.
Shutt, Merrill M.|Fleuret, Anne · 1994

Abstract
Evaluation covers the period 8/90-12/94. The project has made exceptional progress. Notable project contributions include solid improvements in contraceptive logistics and availability; the proportion of facilities offering injectibles, IUDs, and contraceptive foams has more than doubled, and almost 100% of facilities offer oral contraceptives and condoms. As a result modern contraceptive prevalence has more than doubled, there has been a 46% increase in the number of first attendances for family planning services, the number of resupply client visits has increased 40-50%, and 79% of women and 90% of men have knowledge of at least one modern contraceptive method. In addition, the project has assisted the Family Planning Unit within the Ministry of Health in assuming unquestioned leadership of the National Family Planning Programme (NFPP). A wide variety of training has been supported. USAID/Tanzania, working in close partnership with the Tanzanian government, cooperating agencies (CAs), and other donors, has been flexible in responding to the country's changing needs. In order to continue and increases momentum, additional USAID and other resources will be needed through the project completion date.
