Abstract
The training utilized note books, pens, pencils, and monkey orange crafts as materials to facilitate discussion. Each training event followed a set agenda. Introduction to Monkey Orange covered its brief history, four varieties, and cultural significance. The four varieties of monkey orange are Amakome (Strychnos pungens), Amashe (Strychnos spinosa), Umulung (Strychnos innocua), and Umulung (Strychnos pungens). The training highlighted the medicinal, survival, and survival plant properties of monkey orange. Participants were asked to share their knowledge of monkey orange in their local language and how to identify the fruit. The training also covered the cultural significance of monkey orange in everyday life. Women were found to have extensive knowledge of monkey orange as a medicine, food, and household item, while men related to it as a food, medicine, and fabrication material. Children knew monkey orange as a fruit and recreational material. The training emphasized the importance of forest products and environmental appreciation. Participants were asked to share their knowledge of trees, tree planting, and the importance of trees. The training also covered deforestation in the area, with participants sharing their experiences of tree cutting and charcoal production. The training concluded with a discussion on the importance of environmental appreciation and the role of monkey orange in everyday life. The deputy head of the school praised the trainer as a practical and effective educator, stating that the students were able to see the work and ask questions. The training was deemed a success, with the deputy head planning to incorporate the monkey orange crafts into grade nine and ten civics lessons. The training was conducted at Kapopo School, with 40 students in attendance. The senior teachers also attended the presentation, indicating a high level of interest in the environmental education session. The training was a significant step in promoting environmental awareness and appreciation among the students. The use of monkey orange crafts as a teaching tool was effective in engaging the students and promoting learning. The training highlighted the importance of forest products and environmental appreciation, and the role of monkey orange in everyday life.
