Abstract
DURATION: June 1, 1974-May 30, 1979. DEVELOPMENTS: The long-range goal of this project is to upgrade LDC capabilities for assessing and implementing the best use of natural resources, including application of more effective techniques for identifying and appraising resources; improved planning and management strategies and procedures based on concepts of integrated, multiple purpose resource use; and environmental protection. Four projects have been designed for three developing countries: (1) a comprehensive regional natural resources development study in Niger; (2) a nutritional ecology study in Ghana; (3) a remote sensing applications project in Ghana; and (4) a land use study in Peru. A major part of the report is taken up with the tables and appendices which include a report by the West Africa conference review team, a document list for the University of Arizona/Niger study, a report on the methodology of the village survey, and a list of the organizations serving the agricultural sector in Niger. Projects in varying stages of completion during the third grant year were: a handbook for natural resources development, a remote sensing project for northeast Ghana, a research report on rock phosphate for fertilizer, a systems analysis and remote sensing applications project for Peru, an assessment of regional natural resource development in Niger, a nutritional ecology study for northeast Ghana, a study of the role and importance of women in natural resources development, and a research report on the impact of groundwater development in arid lands.
