USAID. BUR. FOR NEAR EAST
Project to help Near East countries develop, implement, and evaluate population/family planning (P/FP) programs.
1983
Abstract
The project will fund small, brief subprojects (SP"s) in six areas: service delivery; information, education, and communication (IEC); data collection/program evaluation; information dissemination to Near East leaders; training; and private sector participation. Implementation will be on a case by case basis. National FP programs (as well as the FP components of health programs) will be strengthened. SP"s under this component will be tailored to local conditions and will range from program start-up to sophisticated program refinement. Contraceptive provision will be considered, as will experimental projects in contraceptive retail sales and natural FP. During FY83, regional conferences and workshops will be held and FP associations in Yemen and Jordan supported. Under the second component, local IEC skills will be strengthened and effective IEC materials developed and widely distributed. FY83 SP"s will focus, inter alia, on improving distribution of materials and identifying regional IEC needs. Third, SP"s in data collection/evaluation will support FP by, e.g., providing baseline data for pilot programs or financing program evaluations; contraceptive prevalence studies will be funded in at least 2 countries during FY83. The fourth component will provide policy-related P/FP information to Near East leaders. During FY83, SP"s will update RAPID data in Turkey and strengthen links between RAPID analyses and data from other sectors in at least one country. Fifth, training will be provided in many disciplines, e.g., demography, public health, social science, program management, and law, as they relate to P/FP. FY83 SP"s will train midwives, pharmacists, and FP professionals. Also contemplated are outreach training for field workers, specialized training for physicians, and training of FP program managers. Finally, both national and regional private sector activities will be helped to demonstrate the social acceptability of well-run FP programs, provide services beyond the capabilities of the public sector, and inform the public. FY83 SP"s will include studies of contraceptive retail sales and the role of pharmacies in FP. Amendment of 6/30/87 to a Cooperative Agreement with Johns Hopkins University under project 9363004 authorizes JHU to help the Turkish Family Health and Planning Foundation develop and execute an IEC campaign.
