Abstract
New information is provided on: (1) the effectiveness, safety, and acceptability of Norplant implants (Chapter 1); (2) the importance of thorough counseling to improve client satisfaction and continuation (Chapter 2); (3) a simpler process for client assessment (Chapter 4); (4) the management of the most common side effect, changes in the menstrual bleeding pattern (Chapter 8); and (5) a removal method that is easier to learn than the standard method (Chapter 9). A new chapter, Providing Quality Services, reflects the need for up-to-date information on practical ways to assess the quality of Norplant services, seek solutions to problem areas, and gradually introduce changes that will improve all areas of service delivery. Moreover, the new chapter documents the importance of having well thought-out service delivery and training standards which can be tailored to the clients" needs by the service delivery team and clinic manager. Attempts were also made to harmonize the guidelines with the most recent documents available in an effort to make these guidelines as up-to-date as possible.
