Abstract
This booklet offers a guide to the educational innovations being implemented in Mali, where the project works in conjunction with USAID"s Basic Education Expansion Program (BEEP) and two Malian educational research organizations: the Institut Pedagogique National and the Institut Superieur de Formation de la Recherche Appliquee. The guide describes four IEQ techniques which are designed to be implemented in conjunction with one another: teaching large groups, so that the better students can help teach those who are performing less well; use of folktales and legends in teaching; use of the mother tongue as well as French to improve comprehension; and selection of teaching materials that support these techniques. Annexes discuss how to conduct a group class effectively and to use stories to introduce a foreign language. A pictorial history of IEQ concludes the guide.
