Privatization of state-owned enterprises in Egypt : labor issues and prospects for development
Sign inPRICE WATERHOUSE. INTERNATIONAL PRIVATIZATION GROUP
One of the major hurdles to privatization in Egypt has been labor opposition due to fear of massive layoffs which would worsen unemployment.

Abstract
Quite often such fears are out of proportion because of lack of information about the exact number of displaced workers. This empirical study addresses the need of decision makers for facts and numbers to allow them to assess the practical impacts in order to chose the appropriate actions. In fact, based on various scenarios, the number of displaced workers in Egypt would not be as serious as many have presumed. The privatization phenomenon has reached the growth stage of its life cycle and privatization strategists need less descriptive information and more empirical data to improve their decision-making process.
