Abstract
1. EDUCATION AND TRAINING; TWO NEW DOCTORAL STUDENTS WERE RECRUITED. A NEW TWO-YEAR MA PROGRAM ESPECIALLY ADAPTED TO THE NEEDS OF APPLIED RESEARCH IN LDC"S WAS DESIGNED AND A NUMBER OF STUDENTS WERE RECRUITED. A SEMINAR IN WASHINGTON, DC IN 10/73 OUTLINED SUCCESSES AND LIMITATION OF THE APPLICATION OF MASS MEDIA TO LDC DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS. IN 8/74, A SEMINAR WAS CONDUCTED IN MEXICO CITY STRESSING THE EVALUATION OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY APPLIED TO VARIOUS PROBLEMS, E.G., EXTENSION OF FORMAL SCHOOLING OPPORTUNITIES TO POPULATIONS DEMANDING SECONDARY SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE. 2. RESEARCH: NO NEW FIELD WORK WAS I NITIATED. 17 RESEARCH PAPERS WERE WRITTEN- 10 ON THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN OUT-OF-SCHOOL EDUCATION, 2 ON EVALUATION METHODOLOGY, 3 ON MEDIA USE IN FORMAL EDUCATION, AND 2 ON SATELLITES AND TELECOMMUNICATION POLICY. 3. CONSULTATION AND LINKAGES: STANFORD STRENGTHENED ITS CAPACITY FOR CONSULTATION BY THE APPOINTMENT OF THREE REGULAR, JUNIOR MEMBERS TO ITS FACULTY IN COMMUNICATION AND INVOLVING FOUR OTHER SENIOR FACULTY IN THE WORK OF THE GRANT. TRIPS BY FACULTY TO ASIA AND LATIN AMERICA RESPONDED TO LDC"S REQUESTS. TWO MAJOR CONFERENCES IN COLLABORATION WITH THE EAST-WEST CENTER IN HAWAII STUDIED COMMUNICATION RESEARCH NEEDS. LINKAGES WITH A NUMBER OF US AND FOREIGN INSTITUTIONS WERE MADE AND/OR STRENGTHENED.
